The podcast, Black Voices in ABA was very informational and eye opening. There were six black individuals who currently work in the field of aba that attended the podcast. All of these participants were going back to school to obtain another degree ( doctorates or another masters). In the beginning of the podcasts, all six participants spoke about their previous experiences being black and working in the field of ABA. All of these participants felt a similar way. They felt they had to work a lot harder than Caucasian individuals due to their race and to gain respect in the field. Clients and colleagues did not believe they accomplished what they have. They felt their blackness came out more when they gained more power in the field by becoming BCBA’s. They all started off as behavior therapist and had little issues as behavior therapists. They explained how racial identity shows up at work. These participants discussed when conducting phone consultations and initially speaking to the parents, the parents think these participants sound Caucasian. When the participants initially meet the families and clients, the families and clients do not think they are the BCBA on the case. When meeting the clients,they all felt that the clients did not know how to interact with them nor act towards them due to their race. When attending conferences they all stated that they felt they had to prepare not only what they were going to talk about but, how they were going to look. They all discussed that they spent a lot of time picking out professional outfits and planning out when they would get their hair cut. They mentioned Caucasians sometimes would show up with baggy pants and wrinkly shirts. But, if they attended the conference looking like that they would get judged. They feel the need to keep proving themselves to everyone because having knowledge about the field is not good enough. The standard for Caucasian’s is not the same for blacks. When these individuals attended conferences they stated that they were the only black voice at the table. They needed to be very prepared and work a hundred and fifty percent to get viewed as a hundred percent. They feel frustrated because they feel they work a lot harder than Caucasians do because of their race. They also speak about code switching. Code switching is a linguistic term that is used to change language to fit into the larger society linguist patterns. Participants stated when using code switching they have to read the audience to see what is appropriate to say and what is inappropriate to say. Lastly, they speak about how they can solve this issue. The ways they can solve this issues is writing blogs to make people aware of what is happening, requesting multi-cultural demographic data since ABA is so focused on data, educating and helping behavior therapist and RBT’s obtain a higher education and honestly from people who know and care about diversity.
I have learned a lot from this podcast. I have only worked with BCBA’s that were Caucasian. I have learned to be more aware of this issue and to be more accepting of people in the field of ABA. Honesty, I never really thought this was an issue in our field and this podcast made me realize that it was and that is not fair. I can better serve my clients by following the ethical code, 7.01 promoting an ethical culture. This code states that behavior analyst encourage ethical culture in their work environment and make others mindful and conscious of this ethical code (Bailey & Burch, 2016). I can better serve my clients by being educated and aware of other cultures as well as educating other colleagues about different cultures. The ethical code 7.0 Behavior Analysts’ Ethical Responsibility to Colleagues and 7.01 is related to this diversity and equity. These codes refer to working with colleagues and being aware of all ethical situations and prompting ethical culture in the work environment.
